Accounting for Your Cottage Industry Class

  • BrynTeg Farm N1087 Saint John's Way Oconomowoc, WI, 53066 United States (map)

Maybe you recently started a small business or a cottage industry out of your home. But you have no structure in place? Or maybe you have ideas swirling around in your head for the last five years, and now you’re ready to start acting on those ideas and turning them into a money-making venture.

As a new business owner, you need information to help you understand your reporting and tax requirements. The initial stages of a business start-up can feel overwhelming, especially depending on the product or service you plan to market. You could simply go to IRS.gov or Wisconsin’s Department of Revenue website (revenue.wi.gov) to find what you need, but that can be overwhelming, too! Where do you start?

You are invited to our Accounting for Your Cottage Industry Class taught by Tara Watterson, CPA, with Accourage CPA LLC. If Tara’s name seems familiar to you, it should! Together with Farmer Caryl, Tara runs and manages BrynTeg Farm. As her off-farm job, Tara is also a CPA helping small businesses with their accounting needs. To learn more about Tara as the CPA, read more here.

Tara has spent almost nine years developing this class. Originally, the content was designed for one-on-one meetings with an individual or couple (which still is offered, if you prefer that format!). But she was encouraged to offer the content in a class format so more people could benefit and at a more budget-friendly price.

As a budding entrepreneur, Tara wants to help you sort through the many new business considerations you are facing. Do you have these types of questions?

  • Should you become an LLC or incorporate?

  • Do you need an EIN?

  • Are you required to collect sales tax?

  • What can I deduct for business use of my home?

  • What’s the difference between an employee and a contractor?

  • How much will you pay in self-employment taxes?

  • What tax filing requirements will you have?

  • What expenses should you track?

  • What items should you consider in a start-up or first-year budget?

  • How should you capture your income and expense transactions?
