Can you have too many onions?

Onion Fields 3-01.png

Dear Farm Friends,

Over 4,500 onion plants. Yes, we have now planted and watered over 4,500 onion plants. (Why did we water? We watered because the soil is dry and the rain dissipated before it hit the ground this week). There is rain in the forecast next week, which we are looking forward to it. The picture above shows one of our fields planted with onions.

We planted these onion varieties:

  • Copra: sweetest tasting and a storage onion

  • RedWing: Red onion

  • RingMaster: White sweet Spanish

  • WallaWalla: Yellow, sweet mild flavor

Do you have a favorite onion variety?

Your Farmer,
Caryl

P.S. Some of the spinach seed started pushing through the soil this week. Exciting!

Did you know?

  • Bulbing onions are greatly affected by the day length.

  • The bulb size is related to the size and number of the leaves. (FYI, those green spikes that come out of the bulb are its leaves.)

  • Each leaf is a ring of onion.

  • Larger leaves make larger rings.
